A beautiful vintage Portmeirion handled pot, decorated with generous sprays of pink and peach roses both inside and out. Its softly flared rim and traditional chamber pot shape make it a charming decorative planter, but the most interesting detail is hidden underneath: the distinctive red Welsh dragon backstamp reading Porthmeirion Cynnyrch Cymru — Product of Wales.
A little piece of Welsh pottery history
Between 1978 and 1982, Portmeirion operated a small decoration workshop in Penrhyndeudraeth, North Wales, close to the famous Portmeirion Village. Pottery made at the company's Stoke-on-Trent factory, including seconds, was sent to Wales to be decorated by local workers using hand-painted designs and transfers.
Pieces decorated at this short-lived workshop received the distinctive Welsh dragon backstamp, making them an interesting departure from Portmeirion's usual English production history.
This bowl carries that very mark, along with a small handwritten number 6 beneath its base. Its generous rose decoration, traditional shape and unusual Welsh connection give it a story well beyond its pretty appearance.
A lovely vintage piece for a country cottage, a collection of Welsh pottery or a traditional home filled with character.
